Leo Chalhoub Blog Week 6

To think week six has already arrived is hard to believe. Since I last wrote, so many different things have happened; I’ve been out on multiple shoots, edited various pieces, and even got the opportunity to be a production assistant on the set of a sports commercial. I never thought that I would ever have been a part of so many different things not only at this internship but also in a matter of six weeks.

Although there’s been a handful of exciting experiences thus far, the most exciting has definitely been serving as a production assistant on the set of an AXE Bats commercial. A couple weeks ago, the JTWO team, including all three interns, set out to Camden, NJ to shoot a ninety-minute commercial for AXE Bats, a Baden Sports company. There were around forty people total on set, including numerous actors, extras, and production members.

Going in, I thought I would just being running errands and getting the crew waters, typical PA stuff. However, to my surprise, I, along with my fellow intern Bill, operated one of the main RED cameras for one of the commercial’s shots. The camera and gimbal sat secured in the middle of a metal pole for stability as me and Bill each held one end of the pole and moved about, capturing multiple shots from various angles. Getting the shot was spontaneous and a lot of fun as I got to work with a camera and setup I have never worked with before. Following that, simply watching how other shots were discussed and filmed was a new experience and huge learning process for me. Being an aspiring director, it really helps to watch others lead and take control over a shoot. In addition to the directing, there were tons of new things I learned from a technical standpoint as well. Equipment I have never worked with before was all around me, a

couple examples including the RED camera and gimbal and a drone. Photographers were on location as well, and seeing them set up different lighting arrangements and use various lenses to get the shots they wanted was enlightening.

I’m currently editing a lot of the content from the AXE shoot back at the office. I had the opportunity to cut a sixtysecond version of the main commercial along with a behind the scenes video and a bunch of short videos to be showcased on social media. Having been at the shoot and seeing how the footage turned out before and after various stages of editing is eyeopening. I’m able to see how far a shot can come after it has been color corrected and cut properly. To be able to then edit the videos myself takes the entire experience to a new level.

Six weeks in, my experience at JTWO has been nothing but a positive one. I’ve learned a ton of things already by participating in the various stages of video making with a proper team. Having already accomplished and been a part of so much, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead.
