Mission First Housing Group Logo

Mission First Housing Group’s mission is to develop and manage affordable, safe and sustainable homes for people in need, with a focus on the vulnerable. They ensure our residents have access to resources to help them live independently. They deliver housing that provides long-term benefits to residents and neighborhoods, alike.

During this year’s video we had the opportunity to learn about Mission First’s Plaza West Community Life Program, a Washington D.C. based affordable development for individuals, families and “Grandfamilies” –  seniors raising their grandchildren. Mission First developed this program in response to the 2.5 million children being raised by grandfamilies in the U.S.

For this project, we followed grandmother Cassandra Gentry as she sat down to share her struggles of becoming the legal guardian to her grandchildren while undergoing serious financial issues.

The Project

Each year we work with Mission First Housing Group to document and share the story of one of the amazing individuals they offer aid to throughout the year. The shoots take place in both Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC depending on where the resident lives.

For the first micro-doc, we followed Melissa Robbins, an Army veteran that found herself homeless after leaving the military. As a single mother with three kids, she found herself out of options. Discover how Mission First Housing Group helped Melissa to get her life back on track to pursue her dreams.

In last year’s video, we followed military veteran Walter Baker as he sat down to share his struggles with addiction and homelessness.  After on again off again struggles with homelessness, Walter eventually connected with The Whitehall Apartments, Mission First’s veteran housing unit in Spring City Pennsylvania.

This project was made possible through our Projects That Matter Initiative.  The Projects That Matter Initiative is a Philadelphia based video production program with the mission of  providing professional digital media services to Non-Profits at a discounted rate.
